I have authorised the Tax Mouse App with HMRC, but my business isn't showing up. What’s wrong?
This is a very common issue caused by how HMRC sets up online accounts. The Tax Mouse App can only read your data if your Government Gateway is officially registered as a Business Tax Account with the correct MTD taxes added to it.
To fix this:
- Log directly into your HMRC Government Gateway account on a web browser.
- Ensure you are using a Business Tax Account (not just a personal one).
- If you are using a Personal Tax (Gateway) account you can add your Business Tax Account. HMRC will send an activation code in the post to verify your identity (this takes about 7 days).
- Once you receive the code, log back into HMRC, enter the PIN, and your business will officially be live.
- If your business taxes (MTD for IT) aren’t listed on your dashboard, click “Add a tax, duty or scheme” and select the relevant MTD tax.
- Follow the on-screen prompts to link your Business Tax Account to Making Tax Digital for Income Tax
- You can now return to the Tax Mouse App, and your business will successfully appear.
